Beach communities and their architectural interaction with the ocean have always interested me.  So on some level it seeps into all of my work, especially the sky as the day fades and a dazzling sunset overwhelms us with a rich pallet of colors. At sunset one can only stand back awed by the magnificence of nature and the boundless beauty of our water planet. But it is the ocean itself, that provides me with a basic frame of reference. Yet I can only despair of ever capturing even a small part of its visual and physical energy.  As this oceanic storm energy explodes on shore as surf, these breaking waves provide a recurring inspiration for artists to explore and surfers to challenge.

While irresistibly drawn to breaking waves, I try to resist the standard seascape as such. Instead, in my work I try to graphically explore the dynamic where oceanic phenomena and man-made structures interact.

Having traveled a good deal in search of surf, I have had the opportunity to see this natural interaction in many locales.  From California beach towns, to fishing villages and coastal ports in Mexico and Central America, to remote islands in the Pacific and Indian Oceans, the similarities are greater than the differences.

Waves / Piers
 off the lip
Breaking  waves (and  the piers that effect them), with or without surfers, are always an alluring subject for me.
Boats
SultansBoth of the paintings of  boats  are  'dhoris'.  The dhori is a flat-bottomed craft designed to negotiate the shallow waters over the coral reefs of the Maldives, a Muslim nation built on atolls in the Indian Ocean.
 Buildings
Noteworthy buildings that I have found around my home town of Pacifica or in the course of my travels.
Sunsets

Sunsets are a  tempting but difficult subject available here on the western edge of the North Anerican continent.
